Does Medicare Cover Mental Health or Therapy Visits?

Emotional Wellness Is the New Frontier in Medicare

So yes — Medicare does cover mental health and therapy visits. And that’s something worth talking about.

What’s Covered

Under Medicare Part B, you’re covered for:
  • Outpatient therapy sessions (individual or group)
  • Psychiatrist and psychologist visits
  • Medication management by mental health providers
  • Depression, anxiety, and substance use treatment
If you’re hospitalized for a mental health condition, Part A covers your stay and treatment. Medicare also recently expanded coverage for telehealth therapy, meaning you can see a provider virtually from home.

What’s Not Covered

Medicare doesn’t cover life coaching, couples therapy (unless medically necessary), or alternative therapies that aren’t evidence-based. And of course, it doesn’t pay for 24/7 custodial care or housing in mental health facilities.

Tip:

Mental health is health. Many Advantage plans now include expanded mental health benefits, mindfulness apps, and teletherapy options.
