Can You Switch Back from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare Anytime?

The Most Misunderstood “Yes, But…” in Medicare

Ah, the classic question: “If I don’t like my Medicare Advantage plan, can I just switch back anytime?”
The answer is… yes, but not whenever you want.

Timing Is Everything

You can switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare:

  • During AEP (Annual Enrollment Period) — Oct 15 to Dec 7
  • During MA OEP (Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period) — Jan 1 to Mar 31

Outside of those windows, you can only switch if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period — like moving, losing other coverage, or your plan leaving your area.

The Bottom Line

You can leave Medicare Advantage — but timing and rules matter.
Always talk to a licensed agent (hi ) before making the move to avoid gaps or surprises.
