The Secret Reason Your Doctor Might “Not Accept” Your Medicare Plan

Why Some Offices Say No — Even When They Take Medicare

Here’s a classic frustration:
You call your doctor to confirm an appointment, and the receptionist says, “We don’t take your Medicare plan.”
Wait — what? They take Medicare! So why not yours?

The Hidden Difference: Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage

Many offices do accept Original Medicare, but not all accept Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans.
Advantage plans are run by private insurance companies — each with their own network and billing systems.

So when an office says they “don’t take your plan,” it usually means they’re not in-network with that carrier — or simply don’t want to deal with that plan’s paperwork.

Tip:

Always ask your doctor’s office specifically:

“Do you accept this specific Medicare Advantage plan?”
or
“Do you bill Original Medicare?”

That one question can save hours of confusion.
